10 ways to honour your mum (or mother-in-law) at your wedding

Chances are, your wedding day is a big deal for not just you, but your mum too. When you want to honour just how wonderful she is, make her (or your mother-in-law-to-be) feel special with these sweet ideas.

1. One of the girls

Even if she’s not in your bridal party, inviting your mum to get ready with you and your bridesmaids is something she’ll love. The laughs, the pampering, the cheeky drinks… they’ll all make for fabulous memories – and your makeup artist will get Mum looking her best for the day.

2. Photo op

At some point in the day, make sure you get a few photos with your mum. It’s a simple idea but can get forgotten in the excitement of the day.

3. Words of wisdom

You might have to endure some embarrassing stories, but it’s a lovely idea to ask your mum to give a speech. Also, if you’re saying a few words yourself, don’t forget to give a shout-out to your mum!

4. Love notes

Write a sweet little thank you card and give it to her on the morning of the wedding. Or, have it delivered to her accommodation.

5. Aisle be there

Ask your mum to walk you down the aisle with (or instead of) your dad. Or, really make her feel special and ask her to be a matron of honour or ‘flower mum’.

6. Something borrowed

Ask your mum about heirloom pieces or if you can wear something from her special day. Whether it’s a hairpiece or a pair of earrings, little touches like these are, um, touching!

7. VIP seating

Decorate her seat at the ceremony and/or reception with a small ‘mother of the bride’ sign or special floral decoration.

8. Special snaps

Set up a table of your favourite photos throughout your life (include some with mum!), or showcase some of her old wedding photos. We love when brides display a photo relating to the events of the day – like having a framed photo on your cake table of your mum cutting her wedding cake back in the day.

9. In loving memory

If your mum has passed on, make sure she’s still with you on the day, by including a picture of her in a photo charm on your bouquet. Alternatively, make a special toast to her (with her favourite drink, of course!) at your reception.

10. Sweet treats

Is your mum famous for her brownies? Is she constantly badgered for her legendary shortcake biscuits? Honour her in the most delicious of ways by giving your guests her signature treat as bombonniere (and maybe even the recipe, if it’s not a family secret). Just don’t ask her to bake them!
